Introduction The spectacular Internet growth in Europe from the mid 90s has fundamentally changed the face of the Telecommunication industry. Often late starters in this industry, such as incumbent carriers, had to enter this booming market not only as backbone providers, but also as corporate and residential Internet access providers. This change in outlook has provoked massive alliances, mergers and acquisitions and unfortunately bankruptcies. The hype was only short-lived. The dot.com bubble burst in March 2000 prepared the collapse of the world’s biggest operators – WorldCom, KPNQwest, Global Crossing...
This economic downturn increased rapid restructuring in an industry that faces today important challenges.
